Binding A Quilt With Minky Backing

This is a great way to use up scraps of minky fabric. Then i cut it 2 1 2 inches wide. Once you are at the point that you are ready to bind a quilt that is backed in minky or cuddle trim the excess of leaving about 1 of backing and batting. For this quilt i did the classic hand sewn binding method that my grandma taught me.
Sew cotton and minky wrong sides together using a 1 4 seam and be sure to pin well so the layers don t shift. In fabrics with a pile such as velvet and minky the fibers lay tilted in one direction. The only thing i do differently when backing a quilt with minky instead of regular cotton is to make sure i cut wide enough strips 2 5 usually and test to make sure there is enough binding to fully cover the initial stitch line. A touch from the iron helps here to set the crease.
When binding a quilt with minky you will want to have a thicker binding than you would with a cotton binding because of the extra bulk. If the naps are running opposite there will be a noticeable difference in color and sheen. There s nothing like a soft edge to a quilt. I used it for a quilt for my gd.
When you sew two pieces of minky together be sure that the fibers are lined up in the same direction. I cut my binding at 2 1 4 inches wide unless i am using a heavy backing like minky. Then i stitch the binding on the front of quilt and wrap around the edge to the back and hand stitch the back. Fold the cotton over once just up to the edge of the minky.
